Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya

From the Principal’s Desk

Welcome, all of you, to the official Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya site. The Mission Mahavidyalaya, located in the Haldia subdivision of Purba Medinipur, aspires to provide quality education to the students of this rural outlying area.

Established on 9th August 1968, Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya has emerged as an educational institution of repute in the district of Purba Medinipur in the state of West Bengal. A result of the dreams of the monks, brahmacharies and philanthropists of the Vivekananda Mission Ashram who felt the need to set up a college in this outlying area of Haldia subdivision to cater to the urge of the locals for higher education, it has today firmly stamped its imprint in the educational map of Purba Medinipur.

Students from this college have been doing well in University examinations, topping the undergraduate examination and bagging the gold medals. The success-rate has also of late taken an upward swing, especially in humanities and commerce our performance has been quite creditable. Students have consistently scored first class marks in these disciplines. The extra-curricular activities of the college are also strong. Along with four units of NSS, we also have regular sports and cultural competitions. Our students have performed creditably over the years in University and DPI Meets. The college Kabaddi team is the reigning University champions.

The college has been regularly introducing new courses and programmes. Some of the new programmes, introduced in the last few years, include undergraduate courses in Sociology, Botany, Zoology and Nutrition. Alongside these, regular 2 years postgraduate courses in Bengali and Philosophy have begun from the session 2013-14.Moreover, Honours courses in Education, Zoology, Nutrition and Postgraduate course in History are now in full swing. A Postgraduate course in Commerce with Farm Management is also slated to commence soon.

Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya is an institution with NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) accreditation and in the month of January 2015, our college underwent this grueling process successfully for the second time. In fact, with B grade, we now belong to the elite club of colleges, affiliated to Vidyasagar University. This has turned out to be a shot in the arm as the institution marches forward to a prosperous future. SAAC (State Assessment and Accreditation Council), a State Government body to oversee functioning of the colleges in the state of West Bengal, has also visited our campus twice in 2009 and 2013. Satisfied with the working of the college they have sanctioned additional funds.

At this point I would like to draw your attention to some of the welcome developments that have taken place in the college in the recent past. Introduction of broadband connectivity which has meant availability of internet to the teachers surely ranks as an important step forward. The students also have been provided internet access. The Remedial Coaching Centre that began its operation from 2008-09 is also performing well. A study centre of Netaji Subhas Open University (I-03) offering courses to students unable to avail opportunities of regular education is in place in the college campus. A training centre of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan - a curriculum to help the students master spoken Sanskrit has been introduced. The college has been regularly organizing National Level / State-Level UGC sponsored seminars. Eleven such seminars have been organized by the departments of History, Bengali, English, Political Science, Philosophy, Commerce, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science in the recent past.

We, in the administration, are committed to further all round development of the college and the completion  of a parallel building in the land behind the main building, housing the departments of Geography, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and Nutrition, is a crucial step in that direction. A separate Central Library building is also now complete.Expanding hostel building for both male and female students, the two storied girls’ hostel, Kalpana Chaola Hall and the boys’ hostel, Vidyasagar Chhatrabas have addressed the residential needs of students coming from remote far flung areas.Infact, the 2nd floor of Girls Hostel is going to be completed soon and students can reside from the session 2016-17. Through Rusa project of Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal, the 1st Floor of the boys’ Hotel and the 6 storied PG Building are soon going to be constructed along with the Lab Equipments, Furniture, Books and Computers. In fact,Rs, 50 lakhs already allotted , out of the total Rusa fund of 2.5 crores, have already  been used for procurement. Moreover, one six -storied new Building for Class-rooms along with Gallery- system Auditorium on the ground floor is also proposed.

It is my hope that, in the not too distant future, the Mahavidyalaya will become the preferred choice of students in Purba Medinipur and establish itself as the pre-eminent institution of the region. The fact that the college has been selected as one of the four campuses for the upcoming Tamralipta University attests to the growing importance of the college in the neighbourhood.

I end by acknowledging humbly the cooperation of everyone connected with this institution - all the stakeholders – for all the development and progress that we have achieved so far.
