Central Library

Brief History

Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya Library was started in the year 1968 when the College started. The Library started with a few collections of Books in a small room at ground floor of the main building. Then, it was shifted to 2nd floor of the Administrative building. Now, the Library has been promoted to the Central Library w.e.f. 23rd January, 2014 in a newly decorated building behind the main Administrative Block.

Now, the Central Library possesses 23,012 (Approx) volumes of Books purchased from the Grants received from the State Govt., the Director of Public Instruction (D.P.I.) and the University Grants Commission (U.G.C.). Apart from this there are Books donated by Kumar Chandra Smriti Raksha Samiti, Sovarani Library, the District Magistrate,and many other distinguished persons. On the other hand, there are few collections provided by the Students’ Union namely Book Bank which enrich the total collection of the Central Library for the benefit of the poor students.

Facilities Provided:

  • The Central Library with all its sections is computerized. Cataloguing and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) are done through computers. The SOUL (Software for University Libraries) is installed in this respect.

  • Stocks all necessary References, Journals, Serials, Pamphlets, Newspapers.

  • The Central Library is a registered member of N-LIST (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content) of INFLIBNET (An Autonomous Inter-University Centre of U.G.C.) which provides valuable E-Resources like E-Books, E-Journals, etc. through its network.

  • Provides E-Books in CD/ DVD version.

  • Free internet facilities for the users.

  • Provides Institutional Membership facility of the Central Library, Vidyasagar University.

  • Provides permanent Loan Facilities to all the Departmental Libraries.

  • Card Catalogue facilities are also provided by the Central Library. Newspaper Clippings, New Arrivals Display and Career Guidance Cell are also done here.

Budget and Financing :

The financial sources of the Central Library are mainly grants from the State Govt. and the grants from University Grants Commission (UGC). The College also bears some money from its own fund in this respect. The sanctioned grants are proportionately allotted to all Departments of the College to purchase Books. The Central Library prepares the budget for UG & PG Courses separately for procuring Books.

Future Plans :

    • Circulation through computer system for more effective services.

    • Closed Circuit Camera for more security point of view.

    • System for proper arrangement of Documents in the shelves for easy access.

    • More collection of E-books in CD/ DVD version.

    • Introduction of Reprography service in the Central Library.

    • Digitization of Rare Books and Manuscripts.
