About the Department

The Chemistry Department set up in the year 1986, begun with Chemistry as a General subject. Later, it was in the year 2006, accorded the responsibility of teaching Chemistry as an Honours subject.

The Chemistry department boasts of two full time sanctioned post which is at present filled in. There are also in the department one Govt. approved Part time and one Guest lecturer appointed by a University authorized selection board consisting of a University recommended subject expert.

There has been a change from the erstwhile Part-I, Part –II and Part-III structure (I+I+I) to the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) from the session 2017-18 based on UGC recommendations.

Our Central Library, spacious and well- ventilated, containing about 619 books both text and references on different disciplines of Chemistry. Bar-coding and digitization of books have completed recently. We also have a departmental library with adequate number of books.

The ‘chalk and talk’ method is still the general method of teaching but innovative methods (i.e. LCD Projector, Overhead Projector, PPT etc.) are also used when necessary to make it more attractive. We encourage an interactive method of teaching where the students are not just passive listeners but active participants in the classroom teaching. The teachers help the students in academic matters of all kinds. They help our students in identifying the right thrust- areas, help them to make wise choices regarding the particular texts to be studied and assist the students in their overall academic enhancement. We also informally advise the students to make the right career-choices and moves.

The department believes in continuous and rigorous students’ assessment. Class-tests are regularly conducted to record the academic achievements of the students. Two (2) class- tests of 10 marks in Honours subject and two (2) class tests of 10 marks in Pass subject have to be taken. The class-tests are important as the University gives the class tests due importance in the preparation of the final academic result of the students. Priority also been given to student attendance as 5 marks has been allotted within internal assessment.

We have organized State level UGC Sponsored Seminar on 16.03.2012 to pay tribute to Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray on his 150th Birth Anniversary. Eminent speakers and scientists, research scholars, faculties from nearby institutes and our students made this event a grand success. Our faculties supervising research projects under the aegis of UGC. Department has completed two UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project through which we are engaged in active research.

The department with inadequate number of teaching staff is trying its level- best to prepare the students for the final University examinations and ensuring employment in the future.
