About the Department

The Department of Philosophy of Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya started its glorious journey in August, 1968. Having just a few students, Philosophy was offered only as Pass (General) subject in the beginning and gradually the department offered 3-years Degree Philosophy (Honours) course at the under graduate level from the session 1994-95 with a view to disseminate Philosophical i.e. religious and ethical knowledge among the students and acquainting the students with the traditional and emerging areas in the discipline. Realising these objectives, our teachers teaches the students on various burning social, political and ethical issues. However, from the session 2006-07, B.A. honours in Philosophy was studied as 3-Tier (Part-I, II & III) Degree course with a view to complete Part-I of the course in the 1 st year, Part-II in the 2 nd year and Part-III in the final year. As per the direction of Vidyasagar University regular class Tests i.e. the internal assessment Examinations are conducted by the department for both Honours and General courses. In the session 2018- 19, University has introduced a new system i.e. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for both Honours and General courses at under graduate level and therefore from this session the students who have admitted to B.A. 1 st year Honours have to study under this system.
