About the Department

The  Department  of  English  commenced  its  journey  in  the  Vivekananda  Mission  Mahavidyalaya ,  Chaitanyapur ,  Purba  Medinipur  with  the  teaching  of  English  language  and  literature  as  an  Elective  Subject  in  the  year  1989-90.   But  the  gradual  manifestation  of  capability  to  offer  more  brought  to  it  the  responsibility  of  teaching  this   World  Language   and  Literature   as  the  Honours  subject  later  in the  year 1996-97 .  Since  then ,  the  department  has  been  burgeoning  with  its  untiring  effort  to  cater  to   the  inquisitive   pupil  which  has  attracted   the   local  and  the  distant  learners  as  well.  It  has  adopted  the  progressive  mode  of  teaching-learning ( audio-visual  method )  using  Power - Point  Presentation  in  ICT  based  class-rooms  ,  air-conditioned  Smart-Room ,  uploading  study-materials  in  Students’  Section  of  college  website ,  group-discussion   ,    dramatization of  texts   etc . Though  the  modern  technique  of  teaching-learning  is  in  full  swing  these  days ,  especially  after  the  Pandemic  of  Covid 19 , the    traditional  chalk  and  talk  method    still  exists along with the   distribution  of  printed  study –materials  among  the  students . 

The  department  pays  special  attention  to  develop  the  critical  faculty  of  the  learners   by  organizing  students’  seminars and   quiz-competitions  time  to  time ,  motivates  them  to  participate  in  departmental  wall-magazine  (webzine  during  Covid 19 ) which  also   reveals  their  surprising  hidden  talent  for  art  and  craft  with  beautiful  aesthetic  sense .   The  special  lectures  from  the  distinguished  literary  scholars  are  also arranged  by  the  department  to  provide  the  students   extensive   knowledge   on  a  particular  topic .  The  Add-on  course  on  Literary  Theory  and  Critics   is  a  new  feather  in  the  attempt  of  the  department  for  the  benefit  of  its  students . Moreover ,  the  freshers  are  introduced  with  the  overview  of  English  Literature  and  its  background  through  the  Induction  Course  to  bridge  the  gap  between  functional  communicative  approach  to  language  in  Higher  Secondary  level   to  the  vast  sea  of  English  literature  in  Undergraduate  level.

Interest  for  learning  is  created  in  the  students  by  encouraging  them  to  consult both  the  central  library and  the  departmental  one  ,  though  the  latter   has  a  modest  collection  of   relevant  books  due  to  the  humble  space  and  frequent  change  of  syllabus  in  recent  times .  They  are also  encouraged  to    access   the  e-resources   through  the  N-LIST ,  a  product  of  INFLIBNET  by  the  teachers . The  department  has  one  computer   with the  wi-fi  facility  which  the  students  can  also  avail  as  per  their  needs  under  the  guidance  of  the  departmental  teachers. 

  The  department  being  conscious  enough  about  the  progress  of  the  students  identifies  the  advanced  and  slow  learners  through  the  continuous    assessments   besides  the  Internal  Evaluation  and  the  special  classes  are  taken  for  the  poor  students   whereas  the  advanced  learners  are  instructed  to  help  their  classmates  with  the  cognition .  The  group-study and  the  group – test  are  something  which  imbue  the  fellow-feeling  among  the  students  in  the  department . Apart  from  that ,   the  mentor-mentee  meetings  at  regular  intervals   help  the  departmental  teachers  to  identify  the  academic  or  official  issues  and  grievances  of  the  mentees  and  to  get  them  resolved  with  the  prompt  action .

The  English  Department  boasts  of  its  students  for  the  achievements  in  various  cultural  programmes  in  intra-college  and  inter-college  competitions .  They  also  make  the  department  proud  in  the  successful  campus-placement . With  the  aim  of  holistic  upliftment  of  the  readers ,  the  department  conducts  educational  tour  which  enhances  their   classroom  learning  to  more  realistic one  and  strengthens  the  bond  between  the  pupils  and  teaching  faculty of  the  department . Freshers’  Welcome ,  Farewell  ,  Get-together  with  alumni   are  something    which   flaunt  the  cultural  affluence  of  the  department  . The  students  also  extend  their  social  service  through  the  various  community  outreach  programmes  like  Swachh  Bharat  Abhiyan ,  Safe  Drive  Save  Life  Campaign ,  Gender-sensitization  programme  in  remote  village, Eye-Camp  ,  Unemployed  Youth  Survey in  collaboration  with  NSS  in  college .  The  activities  of  the  department  are  flashed  in  print  as  well  as  electronic  media  which  has  taken  us  to  the  deferential  position  in  the  heartscape  of  the  local  as  well  as  outlying  hamlets .
