History of the College
Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya is a RUSA granted, NAAC accredited (third cycle), "A" graded UGC registered college under section 2(f). After its establishment on 9th August 1968 the college gradually prospered to become one of the leading higher education institutes in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. Initially it was affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Since 1985 it has been affiliated to Vidyasagar University. A group of humanitarian monks, brahmacharies, and philanthropists of Vivekananda Mission Ashram took the initiative in establishing this institution as they felt the need of having a college at Rampur so that the young boys and girls of the area can have access to quality education. The institution envisioned to provide value-based quality education to all sections of society, especially, people belonging to backward communities and develop their ethical and humane potential. The institution initially functioned from two neighbouring institutions set up by the Vivekananda Mission Ashram, namely Rampur Vivekananda Mission Vidyamandir and Bajitpur Saradamani Balika Vidyalaya. It was in the year 1970 the institution got its own premises. The college began its journey with humanities departments and gradually shared its academic space with commerce and science streams. Beginning with only a few departments, the college now has Honours courses in 15 subjects and General courses in 4 more subjects. Keeping pace with the new-age education, the college has introduced emerging subjects like Computer Science, Nutrition, Sociology etc. The college has introduced regular PG courses in Bengali, Philosophy and History under Vidyasagar University in self-financed mode to expand the scope of higher education. The college also successfully runs a study centre under Netaji Subhas Open University, enlisted in the year 2007 that offers both BDP (Bachelor’s Degree Programme) and PG (Post Graduate) Courses. The students of the college are performing well in academics as well as in sports and other cultural activities at the university level. Both curricular and extra-curricular activities are encouraged and nourished in the college.
