National Service Scheme

The College has four NSS units, which regularly participate in different environmental and health drive programmes like Pulse Polio programme, Clean and Healthy Atmosphere drive, Healthy Sanitary System movement and Pure Drinking Water campaign. The NSS volunteers maintain the gardens at Barda Railway Station and Chaitanyapur. The NSS also comes forward to provide relief at the time of natural calamities. For example, they stepped forward when flash floods inundated a large portion of Purba Medinipur in 2008. Furthermore, special camps reaching out to the local community are held each year in the Mahavidyalaya campus.

The following is the list of the major extension and outreach programmes of the four units of NSS in the recent past.

Cleanliness campaign:

Cleaning drives in the adjacent villages are regularly undertaken by the volunteers. Students are made aware of cleanliness of college campus and adjoining areas. The approach road to the college and the surrounding regions are also taken good care of.

Health and Hygiene Awareness:

Iron-level is quite high in the Haldia region, so people are offered suggestions about precautions against polluted water. AIDS awareness drives are undertaken on World AIDS Day (1st December) every year. Voluntary blood donation is actively encouraged and medical checkup of students is done with the help of Students’ Health Home, Haldia.

Adult Education:

The college students are involved in the eradication of illiteracy in the adopted villages where they conduct adult-literacy programmes along with the teachers. Local authorities also extend their helping hands in such endeavours.

Environmental Awareness:

The World Environment Day on the 5th of June, is observed with much fanfare every year. Slideshows, lectures and discussions etc. are held in the college premises. The problem of chemical waste in the Haldia industrial region remains an area of important environmental interest. As part of their afforestation campaign, approximately six hundred saplings of Eucalyptus, Sal, Deodar etc along with various seasonal flowers have been planted by NSS volunteers in the adopted villages and the surrounding areas of the Mahavidyalaya.
